1. Spurs vs. Thunder
This feels like the rivalry the NBA is going to be talking about for years.
San Antonio and Oklahoma City are clearly two of the best teams in the West, and both are built around extremely young superstar cores that should keep them near the top of the conference for a long time. That alone gives this matchup enormous potential.
Then there’s Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren. Their individual battle adds another layer to what could become the defining Western Conference rivalry of the next decade. If these two teams spend the next five or ten years fighting for conference supremacy, this rivalry could become something special.
2. Celtics vs. 76ers
For years, Boston had Philadelphia’s number.
Joel Embiid has lost four playoff series to the Celtics, with three different supporting casts built around him. But the script finally flipped when the Sixers eliminated Boston in the first round.
And then Philadelphia made things even more personal, acquiring former Celtics star Jaylen Brown in exchange for Paul George and draft picks. Add LeBron James, arguably one of the most hated players in Boston history, and suddenly this isn’t just another Eastern Conference matchup.
It’s a blood feud.
3. Knicks vs. Pacers
The rivalry that defined the 1990s is back.
Knicks-Pacers has always been about contrast. Indiana wants to play fast, attack relentlessly and overwhelm teams with offense, while New York brings a physical, bruising style that makes every possession feel like a fight.
At the center of Indiana’s resurgence is Tyrese Haliburton, whose playmaking and pace have made the Pacers one of the league’s most entertaining teams. On the other side, the Knicks have embraced the kind of physical, hard-nosed basketball that made this rivalry so memorable in the first place.
Recent playoff battles have already brought back the animosity. With both teams competing near the top of the East, this is no longer nostalgia- it’s a real rivalry again.
4. Knicks vs. Celtics
New York and Boston have never needed much help hating each other.
The geographical and cultural rivalry has existed forever, but for much of the modern NBA era, the rivalry was more intense among the fan bases than between the teams themselves.
That’s changing.
With the Knicks finally winning a championship, New York has joined Boston as one of the East’s modern powers. Now there is something tangible at stake every time they meet: not just bragging rights, but a battle between two of the conference’s premier franchises.

5. Celtics vs. Heat
Few teams have spent the last decade ruining each other’s postseason plans quite like Boston and Miami.
The rivalry stretches back to the Big Three era, but it reached another level when the Celtics and Heat met three times in four years in the Eastern Conference Finals. Those series produced some of the most intense playoff basketball of the era.
And now there’s a new twist.
With Giannis Antetokounmpo in Miami, the Heat suddenly have another superstar capable of pushing this rivalry into a new chapter. Boston-Miami already had plenty of history. Giannis gives it another reason to burn.
6. Nuggets vs. Timberwolves
If there is one team Nikola Jokić would probably rather not see in the playoffs, it’s Minnesota.
Denver has been one of the NBA’s premier contenders since winning the championship in 2023, but the Timberwolves have repeatedly exposed their weaknesses. Minnesota has eliminated the Nuggets twice in the last three years, using their combination of size, depth and suffocating defense to make life extremely difficult for Denver.
The Nuggets may still be the bigger championship favorite, but Minnesota has become their kryptonite.
The question now is whether Denver can finally figure them out, or whether the Timberwolves are simply a matchup nightmare that isn’t going away.
7. Lakers vs. Celtics
Some rivalries don’t need to be explained.
The Lakers and Celtics have been the NBA’s two defining franchises for generations.
Even when neither team is at its absolute best, Lakers-Celtics still feels different. The atmosphere is bigger. The attention is greater. And every game comes with decades of history attached to it.
This rivalry may not always be the most competitive one on the court, but it remains the NBA’s gold standard for franchise rivalries.
8. Knicks vs. Heat
If Knicks-Pacers represents the return of the 1990s, Knicks-Heat represents everything that made that era so memorable.
These games have always been ugly in the best possible way. Physical defense, hard fouls, low-scoring battles and playoff series that felt more like wars than basketball games.
The rivalry never truly disappeared, but New York’s emergence as an Eastern powerhouse has given it new relevance. Miami remains Miami, and the Knicks are once again one of the teams standing in their way.
