At this point in LeBron’s career, it makes more sense for him to scale back as a scorer and lean into what he still does better than almost anyone: creating easy offense for everyone else.

The problem in Cleveland is that the backcourt isn’t built to maximize that version of LeBron. Both Donovan Mitchell and James Harden are most comfortable with the ball in their hands. Harden, especially, is a pass-first initiator who needs to orchestrate the offense. That likely pushes LeBron into spending more possessions off the ball, functioning as a scoring forward instead of the offense’s primary engine.

The defensive side of the equation is just as tricky. Cleveland already has questions on the perimeter, and asking a 41-year-old LeBron to consistently erase those problems by defending elite wings night after night isn’t a realistic expectation anymore.

That’s why I don’t think the fit is as seamless as it looks on paper. Many of the same questions that followed LeBron in Los Angeles would still exist in Cleveland. Yes, swapping Deandre Ayton and Rui Hachimura for Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen is a massive upgrade in the frontcourt. But the Lakers also had Luka Dončić: arguably the best offensive engine in basketball. Cleveland simply doesn’t have a player who bends defenses at that level.

In the end, I think this team would be very good. A top-four seed in the East feels well within reach. But if we’re talking about legitimate title favourites, I’m not sure this version of the Cavaliers would belong in that conversation.

LeBron James isn’t just deciding where he’ll play next season. He’s deciding how one of the greatest careers in basketball history will end. At this stage, the decision is about far more than basketball. Legacy, family, lifestyle, finances, and one last realistic shot at a championship all matter. After a frantic offseason, the field has narrowed considerably. Miami, Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Golden State feel like the genuine contenders, while Minnesota and Denver remain outside shots.

Miami offers perhaps the most compelling emotional reunion. Whatever tension once existed between LeBron and Pat Riley has long since disappeared, and a return to South Beach would be celebrated by everyone involved. He is the greatest player to ever play for the Heat, even if Dwyane Wade will always be regarded as the greatest Heat because of his longevity and everything he accomplished for the franchise.

From a basketball perspective, the Heat became far more interesting the moment they landed Giannis Antetokounmpo. A frontcourt of LeBron, Giannis, and Bam Adebayo would immediately become the best in the NBA, combining elite size, defense, versatility, and playmaking in a way no other team could match. The issue is everything around them. Miami still lacks enough shooting and proven depth, and those weaknesses become magnified in the playoffs. The ceiling is enormous, but the supporting cast still leaves questions.

Cleveland, meanwhile, offers the perfect storybook ending. A third and final stint with the Cavs would bring LeBron’s career full circle, giving him one last opportunity to win a championship where it all began. He would immediately elevate Cleveland’s offense and solve many of their late-game issues. The concern is whether the Cavaliers’ core has shown enough in recent postseasons. Too often they’ve relied on others instead of consistently imposing themselves, and LeBron alone may not be enough to make them favourites in the East.

Philadelphia deserves to be in the conversation after acquiring Jaylen Brown, while also strengthening its depth with Dean Wade. On paper, that’s one of the league’s most talented teams, and LeBron would be the perfect connector between their stars. The only hesitation is the same one that has followed the 76ers for years: staying healthy and delivering when the playoffs arrive.

Minnesota is an intriguing fit because of Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves’ elite defense, but it still feels unlikely. Even with LeBron, it’s difficult to confidently put them above Oklahoma City or San Antonio in the Western Conference. They’re worth mentioning, but they’re probably on the outside looking in.

That brings everything back to Golden State. The Warriors arguably offer LeBron the most complete package. He stays in California, remaining close to family, while also getting the opportunity to finally team up with Stephen Curry after giving everyone a glimpse of what that partnership could look like with Team USA. Steve Kerr already knows how to coach both stars, and Draymond Green’s team-friendly pay cut has given Golden State the flexibility to make a good financial offer. The basketball fit, the lifestyle, and the financial situation all point in the same direction.

Miami, Cleveland, and Philadelphia all have compelling arguments, but Golden State feels like the destination that makes the most sense when everything is weighed together. Of course, we’ll see how it all plays out. One thing seems certain: wherever LeBron lands, the ripple effect across the league will be felt. The teams that miss out won’t stand still- they’ll immediately pivot to other options in free agency or the trade market, creating another wave of moves that could reshape the NBA before opening night.

The Celtics spent years refusing to include Jaylen Brown in blockbuster talks. They were willing to offer Brown and multiple first-round picks for Giannis Antetokounmpo, but Brad Stevens drew the line when Milwaukee also demanded Boston’s young players. Now, Brown is gone anyway, traded to Philadelphia. Just like that, the defining duo of this era in Boston is over.

At first glance, the return feels underwhelming. Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks doesn’t immediately look like fair value when you’re moving a two-way superstar in his prime for a player who, while still very good, is on the other side of his peak. But trades like this aren’t judged on announcement day. They’re judged by what comes next. Whether Boston flips those picks for more help or George proves to be the perfect fit will ultimately decide how this deal is remembered.

The reaction from Celtics fans has been predictable. Every blockbuster trade creates panic. But George is still an elite defender, a reliable scorer, and a player whose experience could be invaluable in a win-now environment. Add Mitchell Robinson, who gives Boston a legitimate answer against the league’s dominant bigs while providing arguably the league’s best offensive rebounding, and Mike Conley, one of the NBA’s most respected veterans, and it’s easier to see the vision Brad Stevens is building.

For Philadelphia, the gamble is obvious. They gave up significant draft capital to land Brown, but if he meshes with Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and VJ Edgecombe, the Sixers suddenly have one of the league’s most complete starting cores. Dean Wade also quietly fills the role left behind by Kelly Oubre Jr., bringing more size and defensive versatility, even if he doesn’t offer the same scoring punch.

One thing is certain: this offseason has completely reshaped the NBA. Giannis is in Miami. Kawhi Leonard is back in Toronto. Brandon Ingram is with the Clippers. Brown is a Sixer. George is a Celtic. Ja Morant is a Trail Blazer. And LeBron James is returning for one more season: but not with the Lakers.

LeBron James joining the Warriors feels like the NBA’s ultimate final act. After battling Stephen Curry in four straight Finals, the two defining players of their generation are teammates, joining Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, Kristaps Porziņģis and Al Horford for one last championship chase.

What makes this roster so fascinating isn’t just the HOFers- it’s the blend of experience and youth. Golden State has quietly built a good supporting cast with Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody and Gui Santos developing into reliable rotation players. The young core simply needs to bring energy, athleticism and defense around a veteran group that has seen every playoff situation imaginable.

That said, this is far from a superteam. Father Time remains undefeated, and asking a roster built around veteran stars to navigate an 82-game season and four playoff rounds is an enormous challenge. In the Western Conference alone, teams like Oklahoma City, San Antonio and Denver are younger, deeper and better equipped for the long grind of a championship campaign.

Still, if Curry, LeBron, Butler, Draymond, Porziņģis and Horford are healthy when the playoffs arrive, few teams will want to face them. Their combination of elite basketball IQ, championship experience and complementary skill sets gives Golden State a legitimate chance to make one final title run- the stuff of dreams.

Whether it ends with another ring or not, this feels like the NBA’s last great all-in gamble: a team built not for the future, but for one unforgettable season that will go down in history one way or another.

The Clippers and Raptors have essentially swapped timelines.

Toronto is making the kind of bet that front offices dream about and fans lose sleep over. If Kawhi Leonard is healthy in April, there are very few players in basketball capable of changing a playoff series the way he can. Championship-caliber wings simply don’t become available very often, and the Raptors decided the upside was worth the gamble.

The problem, of course, is that “if healthy” has defined Kawhi’s career for years now. He’s still an elite player when he’s on the floor, but every season has become a balancing act between managing his body and hoping he’s available when it matters most. Trading away multiple future first-round picks for a player with that level of injury uncertainty is an enormous risk, especially for a team that isn’t one superstar away from being the clear favorite.

From the Clippers’ perspective, it’s a difficult but understandable pivot. Kawhi’s championship ceiling is incredibly high, but building around someone who struggles to stay on the court eventually reaches a breaking point. Brandon Ingram gives them a younger All-Star caliber forward who can consistently create offense and fits a longer competitive timeline. He isn’t the defender Kawhi once was, nor does he have the same playoff résumé, but availability matters, and Ingram gives the Clippers far more certainty on a night-to-night basis.

The inclusion of Gradey Dick also tells an interesting story.

Just a year ago, Dick looked like one of Toronto’s brightest young pieces. His rookie season suggested he could develop into one of the league’s premier movement shooters, but this past year exposed some real concerns. His shooting regressed instead of improving, defenders became far more comfortable attacking him on the other end, and without elite shot-making to offset those defensive issues, his overall value inevitably declined.

That doesn’t mean the Clippers should give up on him. Shooters often develop on uneven timelines, and a change of environment could help unlock the player many expected after his rookie campaign. But the reality is that he’s no longer viewed as the centerpiece asset he might have been twelve months ago.

That’s why the draft capital becomes so important.

For Los Angeles, this isn’t simply Ingram for Kawhi. It’s Ingram, a still-promising young wing in Gradey Dick, and multiple future first-round picks in exchange for a player who, despite still performing at an elite level, has consistently struggled to stay healthy. That collection of assets gives the Clippers flexibility whether they want to continue competing around Ingram or eventually reshape the roster entirely.

For Toronto, though, none of those future picks will matter if Kawhi is healthy when the playoffs arrive.

This is the definition of a high-variance move. It could be remembered as the trade that put the Raptors back into championship contention, or it could become another reminder that betting your future on a superstar’s health is one of the most dangerous gambles in the NBA.

That’s what makes it fascinating. Both teams can justify the trade today. Only one is likely to love it three years from now.

The Timberwolves trading for LaMelo Ball in exchange for Naz Reid and draft capital would be one of the boldest bets of the offseason.

The logic from Minnesota’s perspective is pretty straightforward. If your priority is maximizing Anthony Edwards’ championship window, eventually you have to stop thinking about raising the floor and start thinking about raising the ceiling. LaMelo does that.

When he’s healthy, Ball is one of the league’s most gifted offensive engines. Few guards can manipulate a defense the way he can, whether it’s throwing hit-ahead passes in transition, creating advantages out of pick-and-roll, or making difficult skip reads that most players simply don’t see. Minnesota has spent the last few years building an elite defense. Adding someone who can consistently manufacture easy offense changes the equation.

The fit with Edwards is especially intriguing. Ant has developed into one of the NBA’s premier shot creators, but he’s often been asked to carry a massive playmaking burden as well. LaMelo takes some of that responsibility off his plate while giving the Wolves another player capable of bending defenses with the ball in his hands. Instead of relying almost exclusively on Edwards to create late in games, Minnesota would suddenly have two players who can initiate offense at a high level.

Of course, this isn’t a risk-free move.

Health has been the defining question of LaMelo’s career. Every discussion about his value eventually circles back to availability. If you’re trading significant assets, you’re betting that the version of Ball we’ve only seen in flashes becomes the version you get over an 82-game season and into the playoffs.

Then there’s Naz Reid.

Reid has become one of the NBA’s best luxury role players- the type every contender wishes it had. His combination of shooting, scoring versatility, rebounding, and energy gives Minnesota lineup flexibility few teams can match. Replacing those minutes isn’t as simple as plugging another big into the rotation. His value goes beyond the box score.

Charlotte’s side of the deal is easier to understand than it might initially seem.

Moving a player as talented as LaMelo is never ideal, but if the organization has concerns about building around an injury-prone star, this package offers a reset without bottoming out. Reid is entering his prime, fits virtually any roster construction, and immediately raises the floor of the frontcourt. Add in multiple draft assets, and suddenly the Hornets have far more flexibility, whether that’s developing young talent or packaging those picks in a future move.

This ultimately comes down to organizational philosophy.

Minnesota would be making a ceiling play. Charlotte would be making a stability play.

History usually rewards teams willing to gamble on elite talent, provided that talent actually stays on the floor. If LaMelo can finally put together a healthy season, the Timberwolves suddenly have one of the league’s most dynamic backcourts and a legitimate path toward contention. If the injuries continue, Charlotte may look back on this as the move that gave them the depth, flexibility, and long-term foundation they were searching for all along.

Celtics fans have every reason to trust Brad Stevens because he has consistently proven himself to be one of the best basketball minds in the NBA. Since moving into the front office, Stevens has made a series of bold and calculated decisions that transformed the Celtics into champions. From assembling a title-winning roster to making difficult financial and roster decisions afterward, he’s shown a willingness to make moves that prioritize long-term success over short-term popularity.

Even after winning a championship, Stevens has kept Boston in a position to compete despite losing key contributors from that title team. Rather than standing pat, he has continued to reshape the roster while maintaining flexibility for the future. His track record suggests that every move is made with a clear vision in mind.

Reports indicate Stevens drew the line when Milwaukee refused to accept a proposed deal involving Jaylen Brown and multiple first-round picks. They wanted additional young players. Whether or not those discussions were ever close, it demonstrates that Stevens is aggressive enough to explore blockbuster opportunities while also knowing when to walk away if the value isn’t there.

Now, the Celtics appear to be exploring ways to diversify their offensive identity. While their three-point-heavy attack has been one of the league’s most effective systems, adding a reliable interior scorer and more quality depth would make the team even more difficult to defend in the postseason. Becoming less dependent on the three-point shot could give Boston another dimension when games slow down in the playoffs.

That naturally leads to speculation about Jaylen Brown’s future. Trade rumours are nothing new for the Celtics, and Brown’s name will likely continue to surface as the front office evaluates every opportunity to improve the roster. Whether he ultimately stays or is moved in a blockbuster deal remains to be seen, but Stevens has earned the benefit of the doubt with every major decision he’s made.

No matter what happens this offseason, the Celtics should enter next season with plenty of star power, a strong supporting cast, and legitimate championship aspirations. As long as they can stay healthy, there’s every reason to believe Boston will once again be among the favourites to compete for another NBA title.

The success of any potential Miami Heat title run would begin and end with Giannis Antetokounmpo’s health. When fully healthy, Giannis remains one of the most dominant and impactful players in basketball. Few players in NBA history have combined his blend of size, athleticism, strength, and skill. He is still one of the league’s most devastating rim attackers, capable of collapsing entire defenses simply by putting his head down and driving toward the basket. Opposing teams can build a game plan around slowing him down, but very few have been able to stop him consistently.

What often gets overlooked, however, is how much more complete Giannis has become as a player. While he is not known as a perimeter scorer, he has shown the ability to knock down mid-range jumpers at respectable rates when defenses concede those shots. More importantly, his passing and decision-making have improved dramatically over the years. He can function as a primary initiator, punish double teams, and create open looks for teammates. Add in his elite rebounding and game-changing help defense, and it becomes clear why he remains firmly in the conversation as one of the NBA’s five best players.

The biggest concern is availability. Over the last several seasons, Giannis has dealt with calf and hamstring injuries that have impacted both his regular-season rhythm and postseason availability. At this stage, the question is no longer whether he is good enough to lead a championship team. The question is whether he can remain healthy through the grind of an 82-game season and then survive four playoff rounds. For Miami, that would be the single most important variable.

Assuming good health, the defensive ceiling of a Giannis-led Heat team would be extraordinary. Miami already possesses one of the league’s premier defensive anchors in Bam Adebayo, whose versatility allows him to switch across positions while still protecting the rim at a high level. Pairing Bam with Giannis would create arguably the most disruptive defensive frontcourt in basketball. Both players can defend multiple positions, rotate quickly as help defenders, and erase mistakes made by perimeter defenders.

Beyond those two stars, the supporting cast would fit Miami’s defensive identity extremely well. Norman Powell has developed into a reliable point-of-attack defender while maintaining offensive value. Andrew Wiggins, when engaged, remains one of the better wing defenders in the league thanks to his length, athleticism, and ability to guard multiple positions. Plus, Davion Mitchell is a great defensive pest who can apply full-court pressure.

Then there is Erik Spoelstra, widely regarded as one of the NBA’s best coaches. Spoelstra has consistently built elite defenses regardless of personnel, maximizing player strengths while disguising weaknesses. Give him a roster featuring Giannis and Bam, and the possibilities become fascinating. Miami could switch aggressively, play zone, trap ball handlers, protect the rim, and generate turnovers at a level few teams could match. On paper, this group would have a realistic chance to finish as the NBA’s top-ranked defense.

The offensive outlook is more complicated.

There is little doubt Miami would be able to generate paint scoring. Giannis alone guarantees a steady diet of high-efficiency opportunities near the rim. Bam’s screening, short-roll playmaking, and interior scoring would complement him nicely. Mitchell would provide a much-needed perimeter creator capable of generating offense late in games, while Powell would add another reliable scoring threat.

The challenge would come from spacing.

Modern championship teams require enough shooting to force defenses into impossible decisions. If opponents can comfortably pack the paint against Giannis and Bam, Miami’s offense could become vulnerable in playoff settings where half-court execution matters most. That is why three-point shooting should remain the organization’s top priority for the remainder of the offseason.

Miami does not necessarily need a roster full of elite marksmen, but it does need enough credible shooters to punish teams for overhelping. Every championship team eventually reaches a point where stars create advantages and role players must capitalize on the open looks that follow. The Celtics have repeatedly demonstrated the value of surrounding stars with shooting at every position. The Thunder, Nuggets, and previous championship teams have all followed similar formulas. Miami must ensure it has enough spacing to maximize Giannis’ strengths rather than unintentionally limiting them.

Depth is equally important.

The NBA season is simply too long and demanding to rely exclusively on star power. Injuries are inevitable, and playoff series often turn on the performance of sixth, seventh, and eighth men in the rotation. Miami’s front office has consistently found undervalued contributors over the years, but if the goal is winning a championship rather than merely competing, additional depth should remain a priority. More shooting, another reliable two-way wing, and rotational flexibility would significantly raise the team’s floor and ceiling.

Ultimately, the vision is clear. A healthy Giannis paired with Bam Adebayo would give Miami arguably the most intimidating defensive foundation in basketball. Donovan Mitchell would provide the perimeter scoring and shot creation that recent Heat teams have lacked. Erik Spoelstra would have the personnel necessary to build a championship-caliber system on both ends of the floor.

There are still legitimate questions about shooting, depth, and health, but those concerns exist for every contender. If Miami addresses its remaining roster needs and receives relatively good injury luck, there is no reason it cannot enter next season as one of the Eastern Conference’s premier title contenders.

The Celtics will remain a benchmark. The Knicks have assembled a formidable roster and should be taken seriously. Yet a healthy Heat team built around Giannis, Bam, Mitchell, and Spoelstra would possess something few teams can match: an elite combination of star talent, defensive versatility, coaching, and postseason experience.

That is the foundation of a championship contender. The rest will come down to health, roster balance, and whether Miami can provide enough shooting around its stars to unlock its full potential when the games matter most.

The Cavaliers face a difficult reality heading into the 2026 season: James Harden can no longer be viewed as the centerpiece of a championship contender.

At some point, the league has to accept what the postseason sample has repeatedly shown. Harden remains a productive regular-season player, capable of elevating an offense and piling up impressive numbers. But when the games matter most, the same concerns continue to surface. His efficiency often declines, turnovers become more costly, and his defensive limitations are magnified under playoff scrutiny.

If Cleveland is committed to keeping Harden, the organization must build the roster with those realities in mind. Simply running it back and hoping for a different outcome is unlikely to be enough. The Cavaliers need a stronger supporting cast capable of compensating for the areas where Harden struggles during deep playoff runs.

The frontcourt presents another difficult question. Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen are excellent regular-season players who provide elite rim protection, rebounding, and defensive versatility. Yet postseason basketball is a different challenge. Against the league’s best teams, both players have too often struggled to impose themselves physically or provide consistent offensive production. Cleveland has to ask itself whether keeping both big men is the best path forward, or whether moving one could help address other roster deficiencies.

The perimeter defense is arguably an even bigger concern.

If your starting backcourt consists of Harden and Donovan Mitchell, elite defenders around them are not a luxury- they are a necessity. Cleveland has repeatedly been exposed by high-level perimeter creators in recent years. Players such as Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Haliburton, and Jalen Brunson have consistently found ways to attack the Cavaliers’ defensive weaknesses. Until that changes, it will be difficult to view Cleveland as a legitimate title threat.

That is what makes this offseason so important.

The Cavaliers have already proven they can win regular-season games. They have shown they can secure favourable playoff positioning and establish themselves as one of the Eastern Conference’s better teams. But those accomplishments no longer move the needle.

The standard has changed.

For Cleveland, success is no longer about winning 50-plus games or earning a top-four seed. It is about proving that this core can survive the intensity of playoff basketball, break through the barriers that have stopped them in recent years, and finally reach the NBA Finals.

Until that happens, questions about this roster, and its ceiling, will remain impossible to ignore.

The Knicks will likely need to part ways with a few key bench contributors this offseason to avoid crossing into the NBA’s second apron. Even so, their foundation appears secure. The starting five of Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, and Karl-Anthony Towns should remain intact, giving New York one of the league’s strongest cores heading into next season. With that group in place, the Knicks are well-positioned to build on this year’s success rather than start over.

Still, projecting future champions is rarely straightforward.

The NBA has not seen a repeat champion in nearly a decade, a reminder that winning a title requires far more than talent alone. Health, timing, matchup luck, and a few fortunate breaks often play just as significant a role as roster construction. A championship run frequently depends on staying healthy through four gruelling playoff rounds while benefiting from injuries or setbacks elsewhere in the bracket. Just as importantly, contenders must capitalize when opponents fail to perform under pressure.

We saw that dynamic play out this postseason. The Spurs repeatedly let double-digit leads slip away, undone by lapses in poise, decision-making, and late-game execution. Those moments ultimately proved costly and may have been the difference between celebrating a championship and wondering what could have been.

That is one reason I expect a different champion next season.

San Antonio should return with plenty of motivation after watching a title opportunity slip through its fingers. If Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper continue their development, and if the supporting cast improves its ability to close out games, the Spurs could enter next season as the team to beat.

In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Celtics remain the standard for sustained excellence. The core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Payton Pritchard gives Boston a strong foundation, and the organization will once again look to President Brad Stevens to strengthen the roster around them. If he can do so, the Celtics should have another legitimate opportunity to reach the NBA Finals and pursue Banner 19.

Beyond the conference’s established powers, several young teams are worth monitoring. The Detroit Pistons appear poised to continue their ascent after a breakthrough season, while the Charlotte Hornets remain one of the league’s more intriguing long-term projects. Both organizations still have work to do, but with continued player development and smart roster additions, each could take a meaningful step forward in the year ahead.

The league’s landscape changes quickly. Today’s contender can become tomorrow’s disappointment, while a young team can rise faster than expected. That uncertainty is part of what makes every NBA season so compelling, and why predicting next year’s champion remains as difficult as ever.

The confetti has barely settled on the 2026 NBA season, but it’s never too early to look ahead.

Every year, the league reminds us how difficult sustained dominance has become. Different champions have emerged season after season, contenders rise faster than expected, and yesterday’s powerhouse can quickly become tomorrow’s cautionary tale.

With that in mind, here are my early predictions for the 2026-27 campaign.

Prediction No. 1: The Knicks Will Remain Elite- But Not Champions

Fresh off an NBA Finals triumph, the New York Knicks enter next season with legitimate expectations.

Their combination of star power, defensive toughness, and playoff experience should once again translate into a top-four seed in the Eastern Conference. The culture is established, the core remains intact, and there is little reason to expect a major regression.

History suggests caution. The NBA has become increasingly difficult to predict at the top, with parity reaching levels not seen in decades. As impressive as the Knicks have been, I expect them to fall just short of another Finals breakthrough.

Prediction: Eastern Conference Finals appearance, but no championship.

Prediction No. 2: Boston Will Return to the Contender Tier

Injuries and roster uncertainty may dominate offseason discussions, but a healthy Boston team remains one of the league’s most complete groups.

The Celtics still possess elite two-way talent, championship experience, and one of the strongest organizational foundations in basketball. Assuming their core returns healthy, they should once again be among the favourites to emerge from the East.

Championship windows don’t stay open forever, but Boston’s remains very much alive.

Prediction: Top-three seed and legitimate title contender.

Prediction No. 3: A Surprise Team Will Crash the Party

This happens pretty much every year.

Nobody predicted Indiana’s Finals run. Few saw Oklahoma City or San Antonio’s rapid rise coming as quickly as it did. The league is simply too talented for preseason projections to hold up perfectly.

Oklahoma City has assembled a roster capable of contending for championships for years, while San Antonio possesses arguably the league’s most exciting long-term foundation.

Their potential battles feel reminiscent of past Western Conference dynasties- a clash of young stars, contrasting styles, and championship aspirations.

If both teams stay healthy, another postseason showdown feels inevitable.

Prediction: Thunder vs. Spurs rematch in the Western Conference Finals.

Prediction No. 5: Nikola Jokić Will Keep Denver Relevant

As long as Nikola Jokić wears a Nuggets uniform, Denver cannot be counted out.

The three-time MVP remains the best player in basketball and continues to elevate everyone around him. Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon provide proven postseason support, giving the Nuggets a championship-caliber core.

However, the supporting cast remains a concern.

Depth issues and injuries have repeatedly exposed Denver in the postseason. Unless the front office strengthens the roster, the Nuggets may struggle to keep pace with the younger contenders rising around them.

Prediction: Second-round exit unless roster upgrades arrive.

It was a title won in quintessential New York fashion: equal parts resilience, chaos, fortune, and an unwavering refusal to quit. Throughout the series, the Knicks repeatedly found themselves on the brink, only to claw their way back into games that seemed lost. The Spurs, led by Victor Wembanyama, will rue the fact that they let three winnable games slip away, but New York deserves credit for constantly keeping those games within reach and giving themselves an opportunity to seize control late.

Many teams would have folded after trailing by 29 points at halftime or facing double-digit deficits with only minutes remaining. The Knicks did the opposite. Time and time again, they fed off the energy of the crowd, raised their intensity, and somehow emerged victorious against the odds. Whether through grit, belief, or sheer stubbornness, they consistently found a way.

The Finals MVP could easily have gone to OG Anunoby, whose elite two-way play was instrumental throughout the series. Yet it feels fitting that Jalen Brunson takes home the award. While he was not particularly efficient as either a scorer or playmaker in this matchup until the final game, he remained the emotional and strategic leader of the team. His clutch shot-making fueled New York’s biggest comebacks, and the defensive attention he commanded created opportunities for teammates to step up in the biggest moments.

More broadly, this championship continues a remarkable era of parity across the league. We have now seen nine different champions in nine seasons, something that would have seemed almost impossible during previous NBA dynasties. On one hand, that variety is refreshing. On the other, only one franchise, the Boston Celtics, managed to reach the Finals multiple times during that span. While Boston may ultimately be remembered for sustained excellence, many of the other champions could fade from the broader NBA conversation outside their own fanbases.

As for San Antonio, this defeat may ultimately prove more valuable than it feels today. Championship heartbreak has often served as the catalyst for future greatness, and the Spurs possess all the ingredients needed to build something special: a generational superstar, impressive depth, organizational stability, and a track record of development. If they respond the right way, this loss could become the foundation of a dynasty rather than the end of a championship opportunity. In fact, they have a far better chance of becoming an all-time great team than many recent champions who captured one title only to fall short of serious repeat contention.

The San Antonio Spurs have held double-digit leads in every game of the Finals. Yet somehow, they find themselves trailing the New York Knicks 3-1.

That disconnect tells the story of this series.

The Knicks simply refuse to go away. Time and time again, they have absorbed punches, stayed within striking distance, and executed when the game mattered most. On both ends of the floor, New York has been the more resilient and clutch team. Meanwhile, the Spurs have repeatedly undermined themselves with careless mistakes and poor late-game decision-making.

Victor Wembanyama has been the best player in the series overall, but he has struggled in the biggest moments. Whether it’s a lack of experience, aggression, or both, the Spurs have not been able to consistently lean on their superstar when games tighten up. The solution seems obvious: get Wembanyama the ball in the paint, where he can generate high-percentage looks, draw fouls, and put pressure on the defense.

Instead, during the Knicks’ historic 29-point comeback in Game 4, San Antonio continued to settle for three-pointers throughout the second half. Possession after possession, they bailed New York out. Every missed shot gave Jalen Brunson another opportunity to chip away at the deficit, and slowly but surely, the momentum shifted.

By the closing minutes, Madison Square Garden had become a force of its own.

The Spurs looked rattled, and the pressure ultimately showed. With the game hanging in the balance, one of San Antonio’s veterans, De’Aaron Fox, made a costly mistake. Rather than dribbling out the clock and forcing New York to foul, he attacked the rim looking for a layup. OG Anunoby met him at the basket with a sensational block, and moments later found himself in the right place at the right time for a remarkable game-winning tip-in at the other end.

It was the defining sequence of the series.

In fact, Anunoby may have played his way into the lead for Finals MVP. While Brunson has delivered his usual offensive brilliance in the clutch, Anunoby has been exceptional on both sides of the ball, making winning plays in every game and impacting virtually every key moment.

Now the Spurs face an enormous challenge.

Blowing a game like Game 4 can leave scars. The second-half collapse wasn’t just a tactical failure; it was a psychological one. Still, there is a reason this series isn’t over. San Antonio has consistently shown that it can build large leads against New York. For long stretches, the Spurs have looked like the better team.

The question is whether they can sustain that level for a full 48 minutes.

If they can eliminate the mental lapses, value possessions, and trust Wembanyama in the moments that matter most, a comeback remains possible. But that’s a big “if.”

Right now, it’s difficult to imagine the Spurs fully recovering from the emotional damage of Game 4. Even if they force a Game 6, they would return to a city desperate to witness its first championship celebration in decades. The energy inside Madison Square Garden would be unlike anything the Spurs have faced all season.

To win the title, San Antonio may need to spoil the biggest party New York basketball has ever seen before returning home and surviving a winner-take-all Game 7.

That’s a daunting path.

And after what happened in Game 4, it feels like the Knicks can already see the finish line.

5. 1971–72 Los Angeles Lakers

This team doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves, largely because its stars were no longer in their primes.

Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West were both in their mid-30s, yet they still led one of the most dominant seasons in league history. Gail Goodrich and Jim McMillian provided crucial support, helping the Lakers achieve a then-record 69 wins.

Most famously, they won 33 consecutive games which is a record that still stands today. For nearly a quarter-century, they held the NBA’s single-season wins record as well. Their sustained excellence over the course of the season earns them a place among the very best teams ever assembled.

4. 1986–87 Los Angeles Lakers

The Showtime Lakers simply changed the way people viewed the game of basketball.

Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar formed one of the greatest duos the sport has ever seen. Around them were ideal complementary pieces: James Worthy, Michael Cooper, Byron Scott, and A.C. Green.

What separated these Lakers from most championship teams was their versatility. They could overwhelm opponents in transition, execute in the half court, and defend at a championship level. Their style was extremely entertaining, but it was also ruthlessly effective.

3. 1985–86 Boston Celtics

Many historians still consider this the greatest Celtics team ever assembled.

Larry Bird was at the height of his career, flanked by Kevin McHale and Robert Parish to form what is the greatest frontcourt in NBA history. The supporting cast was equally impressive. Danny Ainge and Dennis Johnson provided toughness and reliability in the backcourt, while Bill Walton and Scott Wedman strengthened an already loaded bench.

The combination of skill, basketball IQ, physicality, and unselfishness made this team a nightmare matchup. They dominated opponents while playing some of the most beautiful basketball the league has ever seen.

2. 2016–17 Golden State Warriors

If the Bulls were the ultimate two-way team, the Warriors were the ultimate offensive machine.

If I had to choose one team at its absolute peak, I’d still lean toward the 1995–96 Bulls. But the margin between these teams is razor thin, which is exactly why the debate remains one of the NBA’s most fascinating discussions.

Few partnerships have combined greatness and longevity quite like Magic and Kareem. The greatest point guard ever joined forces with arguably the greatest center ever, resulting in five championships and a decade of dominance. As the leaders of the Showtime Lakers, they blended flair with efficiency, winning nearly 70% of their playoff games together while becoming one of basketball’s most iconic duos.

His streak of eight consecutive NBA Finals appearances stands as one of the most remarkable achievements of the modern era, and his versatility makes him the perfect connector for a lineup filled with legends.

Center: Bill Russell

Many fans would place Wilt Chamberlain or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar here, and there is certainly a strong argument for both.

But with four all-time offensive players already in the starting five, Bill Russell brings something even more valuable: the greatest defensive impact the sport has ever seen.

Russell’s rim protection, rebounding, leadership, and commitment to team basketball helped the Celtics achieve a level of success that will never be matched. His résumé includes an astonishing 11 championships in 13 seasons, making him the most successful player in professional sports history.

Head Coach: Gregg Popovich

If there is one coach capable of maximizing a roster filled with basketball legends, it’s Gregg Popovich.

The longtime leader of the San Antonio Spurs built a dynasty around teamwork, accountability, player development, and selfless basketball. With a roster this talented, Popovich’s ability to balance egos and emphasize winning would make him the ideal choice to guide the greatest lineup ever assembled.

The result is a team with elite playmaking at every position, historic shooting, suffocating defense, championship leadership, and an almost perfect balance of individual greatness and team fit. If the goal is to build the most complete starting five imaginable, this lineup has a compelling claim to the crown.

Just one year removed from winning the 2025 NBA Championship, the Thunder were sent home by a young San Antonio Spurs team led by Victor Wembanyama. For most franchises, losing in the Western Conference Finals would hardly be considered a failure. But for Oklahoma City, the series exposed some uncomfortable truths that can no longer be ignored.

The good news? Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is still one of the best players in basketball.

The bad news? The rest of the Western Conference isn’t standing still.

And neither is Victor Wembanyama.

The Thunder do not need to trade Chet.

Adding strength, developing more self-creation ability, and finding ways to reduce the burden on him against elite frontcourts should be a top priority.

Because the reality is simple:

If Wembanyama is the future face of the NBA, Holmgren will be seeing him for the next decade.

The Injury Concern Nobody Wants To Talk About

Jalen Williams remains one of the most complete young stars in basketball.

When healthy.

Unfortunately, health became a recurring theme this season.

Williams dealt with multiple injuries and missed significant stretches of action, including playoff games against San Antonio. Even when available, he often wasn’t operating at 100 percent.

This shouldn’t create panic.

It should create urgency.

The Thunder’s championship formula works because they have three legitimate stars. If Williams becomes unavailable for extended stretches every postseason, Oklahoma City’s margin for error shrinks dramatically.

The front office shouldn’t overreact, but it should acknowledge a reality every contender faces:

Depth matters more than ever.

Which brings us to one of the most encouraging developments of the season.

Ajay Mitchell and Jared McCain Changed The Conversation

Every great team eventually becomes expensive.

The Thunder are heading toward that reality.

That’s why the emergence of Ajay Mitchell and Jared McCain may end up being one of the biggest stories of the year.

Both players provided offensive sparks throughout the season and playoffs, often looking far more comfortable creating shots than expected for players their age. During stretches when injuries piled up, they proved capable of carrying offensive responsibility rather than simply filling minutes.

Championship teams survive because unexpected contributors emerge.

Think of the role players who elevated Denver.

Think of the depth that carried Boston.

Think of the young contributors Golden State consistently developed during their dynasty.

Mitchell and McCain might not become stars.

But if they become reliable playoff rotation players, Oklahoma City’s future becomes much easier to manage financially.

The Lu Dort Dilemma

This is where things get interesting.

Lu Dort remains one of the NBA’s best perimeter defenders. His toughness, effort, and willingness to take difficult assignments are invaluable.

But the playoffs have a way of exposing offensive limitations.

Against elite defenses, there were stretches where opponents were comfortable helping off Dort and daring him to become a primary scorer.

That creates a difficult question for Sam Presti.

Not whether Dort is a good player.

He absolutely is.

The question is whether Oklahoma City can afford multiple limited offensive players in a playoff environment where every possession matters.

The answer may simply be improving the players around him rather than moving him.

But it’s a conversation worth having.

What Sam Presti Should NOT Do

The easiest mistake would be panic.

Fans will inevitably call for blockbuster trades.

There will be social media proposals involving Chet Holmgren.

Some will suggest breaking up the core.

That would be a mistake.

This team is still incredibly young and have not reached their ceiling.

Most franchises would kill to have this foundation.

The Thunder don’t need a revolution.

They need refinement.

What Sam Presti SHOULD Do

If I were running Oklahoma City, I’d focus on three objectives:

1. Add More Size and Physicality

The Spurs exposed Oklahoma City’s lack of strength in certain matchups.

The Thunder don’t need another star.

They need players capable of surviving playoff battles against the likes of Wembanyama, Jokic, and the league’s elite frontcourts.

2. Prioritize Additional Shot Creation

When defenses load up on Shai, someone else must consistently punish them.

Williams can do it.

McCain has shown flashes.

But another reliable creator would make life significantly easier.

3. Keep The Draft Picks

This is where Presti has always been different.

Most contenders empty the cupboard chasing short-term upgrades.

The Thunder still possess one of the league’s strongest collections of future assets.

There is no reason to mortgage the future when the present is already elite.

The Race Is Officially On

For the last two years, Oklahoma City looked like the team everyone else was chasing.

That may no longer be true.

The Spurs have arrived.

Wembanyama is ahead of schedule.

San Antonio’s supporting cast continues to improve.

And for the first time, the Thunder enter an offseason knowing there is another young team capable of matching their long-term trajectory.

That’s not bad news.

It’s exactly what dynasties need.

Pressure.

Competition.

A rival.

The Thunder already proved they can win a championship.

Now they must prove they can adapt.

Because the next decade of Western Conference basketball may ultimately come down to one matchup:

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren versus Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs.

And after what we just witnessed, that rivalry feels like it’s only getting started.

A Painful End to a Promising Season

The Boston Celtics entered the playoffs believing they had another championship run in them.

While many expected the team to struggle after losing Jayson Tatum for much of the postseason, Boston continued to defy expectations. Jaylen Brown elevated his game, Derrick White delivered another outstanding season, and the supporting cast consistently stepped up when needed. Despite the adversity, the Celtics remained one of the Eastern Conference’s most dangerous teams.

That is what makes their second-round exit so difficult to accept.

After building a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Philadelphia 76ers, Boston appeared destined for the NBA Finals. Instead, everything unraveled.

A combination of missed opportunities, poor shooting, and unfortunate circumstances ultimately cost them the series. The Celtics generated plenty of open three-point looks throughout Games 5, 6, and 7 but simply could not convert at the level they had all season.

In the modern NBA, where three-point shooting often decides playoff games, those misses proved fatal.

And then there was the absence of Jayson Tatum.

Without their franchise superstar available for Game 7, Boston lacked the offensive firepower needed to survive a winner-take-all showdown. Tatum’s ability to create offense, draw double teams, and consistently generate efficient scoring opportunities was impossible to replace.

The Celtics fought hard, but the margin for error against a talented Philadelphia team was simply too small.

The Frontcourt Needs Attention

One of the easier decisions facing Boston this offseason will be exercising Neemias Queta’s team option.

Queta has developed into a useful depth piece who provides energy, rebounding, and rim protection whenever his number is called. Keeping him on the roster is a low-risk move that maintains valuable frontcourt depth.

However, the Celtics cannot stop there.

If this season revealed anything, it is that Boston still needs more from its center rotation.

Nikola Vučević was always viewed as a gamble. His offensive skill set and floor-spacing ability offered obvious value, but questions about his defense followed him throughout his career.

Unfortunately, those concerns proved justified.

While his defensive limitations were expected, the bigger disappointment was his offensive production. Boston never consistently received the scoring punch they hoped for, making it difficult to justify his shortcomings on the other end of the floor.

If the Celtics are serious about competing for another championship, upgrading the center position should be among Brad Stevens’ top priorities.

A more athletic, versatile big man would provide the roster with greater flexibility against the league’s elite teams.

The Case for Adding a True Point Guard

Another area Boston should aggressively explore is the point guard position.

This is not to say the Celtics lack playmakers.

Tatum, Brown, White & Pritchard are all capable of creating offense for themselves and their teammates. However, there is a significant difference between players who can make plays and a true floor general who controls the rhythm of an entire game.

At times throughout the season, Boston’s offense became stagnant in late-game situations. Possessions often turned into isolation basketball rather than organised offensive sets.

A reliable point guard could solve many of those issues.

Someone who can manage the pace, protect the basketball, create easy opportunities for teammates, and provide steady decision-making in high-pressure moments would add another dimension to Boston’s offense.

Championship teams almost always have a player who serves as the connective tissue between stars and role players.

The Celtics experienced that firsthand during their 2024 title run.

Remembering the Jrue Holiday Effect

When Boston won the championship in 2024, Jrue Holiday’s impact went far beyond traditional statistics.

Night after night, he delivered winning plays.

A clutch steal.

A perfectly timed assist.

A critical defensive stop.

A momentum-changing rebound.

The type of plays that rarely dominate headlines but often determine who lifts the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

Holiday brought balance to the roster and gave Boston a level of stability that every championship team needs.

The Celtics do not necessarily need to find another Jrue Holiday as players like him are incredibly rare, but they should absolutely prioritise adding someone who can replicate portions of that role.

An efficient two-way point guard would make life easier for everyone on the roster.

Trust Brad Stevens

The encouraging news for Celtics fans is that few executives in basketball have earned more trust than Brad Stevens.

Since moving into the front office, Stevens has consistently demonstrated an ability to identify weaknesses, make difficult decisions, and improve the roster without sacrificing long-term flexibility.

His résumé speaks for itself.

He helped construct a championship-winning team, navigated major roster transitions, and has twice been recognized as the NBA’s Executive of the Year.

That track record should give Celtics fans confidence heading into what could be a transformative offseason.

Final Thoughts

Losing a 3-1 series lead will sting for a long time.

Opportunities to reach the NBA Finals are never guaranteed, and Boston undoubtedly feels it let one slip away. Between the missed three-pointers, the injury to Jayson Tatum, and a handful of costly mistakes, the Celtics will spend the summer wondering what could have been.

But this is far from the end of Boston’s championship window.

The core remains talented. The organisation remains stable. And perhaps most importantly, Brad Stevens remains in charge of improving the roster.

The Celtics may have fallen short this season, but with the right moves this summer, they will once again enter next year as one of the NBA’s most dangerous contenders.

A third and final stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers would make plenty of sense from both a basketball and legacy perspective.

However, this is King James we’re talking about. If he still wants the bright lights, the scrutiny, and the unmatched energy that comes with playing on the biggest stage, then the New York Knicks could become a genuine destination. The opportunity to bring a championship back to Madison Square Garden would undoubtedly appeal to a player who has spent his career chasing history.

Regardless of what LeBron decides, the Lakers appear committed to Austin Reaves as a cornerstone of their future.

Reaves is expected to sign a long-term extension, and with good reason. He has steadily evolved from an undrafted role player into one of the league’s most reliable offensive creators. Alongside Luka Dončić, he gives Los Angeles a backcourt foundation that can remain competitive long after LeBron eventually retires.

The rest of the roster, though, is far less certain.

Rui Hachimura has proven himself to be a valuable contributor and has delivered several strong postseason performances during his time in Los Angeles. Ironically, that success may now price him out of the Lakers’ plans. With other teams likely willing to offer more lucrative contracts, Los Angeles may choose to preserve cap flexibility rather than engage in a bidding war.

If that happens, there’s a real possibility that Hachimura has already played his final game in purple and gold.

The same logic applies to several other veterans. Luke Kennard, Jaxson Hayes, and Maxi Kleber all feel like candidates to depart as the front office looks to reshape the roster and create additional financial flexibility.

One veteran who appears far more likely to stay is Marcus Smart.

Since arriving in Los Angeles, Smart has brought exactly what the Lakers have lacked for years: defensive intensity, leadership, toughness, and accountability. Those qualities don’t always show up in the box score, but they matter immensely inside a locker room. The Lakers clearly value what he brings and should look to keep him as part of their next iteration.

The center position remains a significant concern.

While Deandre Ayton showed flashes of the player many hoped he could become, consistency remained an issue throughout his tenure. There were moments when he looked capable of anchoring the frontcourt, but those stretches were ultimately too infrequent. As a result, a reunion this summer feels increasingly unlikely.

All signs point toward a dramatic roster overhaul.

It’s entirely possible that more than half of the active roster changes before opening night. The Lakers need better defensive balance, greater depth, and more lineup versatility if they hope to return to true championship contention.

And that’s where the challenge becomes even more daunting.

The Western Conference is no longer merely competitive- it’s becoming dominated by emerging superpowers. The Oklahoma City Thunder have built a sustainable contender around youth, depth, and elite talent. Meanwhile, Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs appear destined to become a perennial championship threat for years to come.

That reality leaves the Lakers with little room for error.

Whether LeBron stays or leaves, whether the front office chooses patience or aggression, one thing is clear: this summer will define the next chapter of Lakers basketball.

In a rematch of the 1999 NBA Finals, I believe history is about to repeat itself.

Back then, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the New York Knicks to capture their first NBA championship. Twenty-seven years later, the two franchises meet again on basketball’s biggest stage, and I see the same outcome unfolding.

My prediction: Spurs in 5.

Fresh off a statement series victory over the defending champions, San Antonio enters the Finals with momentum, confidence, and arguably the best player in the world.

The Wembanyama Problem

Every team in the league knows Victor Wembanyama is a matchup nightmare. The challenge is finding a way to stop him.

So far, nobody has.

Wembanyama has been dominant on both ends of the floor throughout the postseason, impacting games as a scorer, playmaker, rim protector, and defensive anchor. His presence changes everything.

The previous series showed just how difficult it can be for opposing big men to deal with his size and versatility. While Karl-Anthony Towns should still be able to generate offense thanks to his elite perimeter shooting, defending Wembanyama for an entire series is a completely different challenge.

If Towns is forced into foul trouble trying to contain him in the paint, New York’s frontcourt depth suddenly becomes a major concern.

Mitchell Robinson is expected to play through a broken pinky finger, and while his toughness shouldn’t be questioned, any injury at this stage of the season can affect a player’s physicality, rebounding, and overall impact.

The Knicks Haven’t Faced Anything Like This

The Knicks have been outstanding throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The problem is that San Antonio presents a completely different level of challenge.

Against previous opponents, Jalen Brunson was often able to target defensive weaknesses and hunt favourable matchups. Whether it was attacking slower defenders or exploiting vulnerable perimeter players, New York consistently found ways to create advantages.

That won’t be nearly as easy against the Spurs.

Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and Julian Champagnie provide length, athleticism, and defensive versatility across multiple positions. Brunson will still get his points because great players always do- but every possession is likely to be far more demanding than what he has faced so far this postseason.

Wembanyama Changes The Way New York Wants To Play

One of the biggest challenges for New York won’t be stopping Wembanyama.

It will be dealing with his presence.

Many of the Knicks’ role players are at their best attacking the basket or operating in the mid-range. Wembanyama’s ability to erase shots around the rim naturally discourages those attempts and forces opponents to alter their offensive approach.

When players begin second-guessing drives and passing up shots they would normally take, an offense can quickly lose rhythm.

That’s exactly the effect Wembanyama has on opposing teams.

San Antonio’s Depth Could Be The Difference

Championship series are often decided by stars.

But depth matters too.

San Antonio appears to have the stronger second unit, with Dylan Harper, Keldon Johnson, Harrison Barnes, and Luke Kornet providing a balanced mix of scoring, experience, and versatility.

New York’s bench, led by Jordan Clarkson, Landry Shamet, Miles McBride, and Robinson, has contributed throughout the postseason, but on paper the Spurs simply look deeper and more complete.

Over a long series, that advantage can be significant.

New York’s Path To An Upset

The Knicks aren’t without hope.

They enter the Finals with extra rest, and they arguably possess more reliable secondary scoring options. Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby have consistently shown they can step up offensively, giving New York additional firepower alongside Brunson and Towns.

The Knicks also understand the importance of the opening games.

With San Antonio holding home-court advantage, stealing one of the first two games feels almost essential. Falling behind early could allow the Spurs to fully seize control of the series.

Prediction: Spurs In 5

New York has enjoyed a remarkable postseason run and deserves enormous credit for reaching the Finals.

But this matchup feels different.

The Spurs have the best player, the deeper roster, the stronger defense, and home-court advantage. More importantly, they have a superstar who can completely reshape a series on both ends of the floor.

As long as San Antonio executes in crunch time and avoids giving the Knicks opportunities to build momentum, I believe the outcome is straightforward.

The 1999 Finals ended with the Spurs celebrating a championship.

I expect the 2026 Finals to end the same way.
