LeBron James and Anthony Davis won the 2020 title in the bubble, but the Lakers never looked like true contenders again. Denver swept them aside more than once, OKC, Phoenix and Minnesota all knocked them out, and one year they missed the playoffs entirely. So this isn’t about recovering from LeBron’s departure. It’s about a new era, with Luka Doncic as the clear face of the franchise.

A superstar without enough help

The Lakers are lucky to have an MVP-caliber player in his prime, but they have to build around him. Austin Reaves gives Luka a very good offensive partner, and Kessler, Sexton and Grimes are solid role players. But in a Western Conference with superteams in OKC and San Antonio, plus Denver, Houston and Minnesota, I can’t see this team getting past the first round as currently constructed.

Where it falls apart

The core problems are frontcourt depth and team defense. Doncic and Reaves are both major liabilities on that end, and the roster isn’t nearly strong enough defensively to cover for them. It creates an impossible task for head coach JJ Redick to navigate.

The bottom line

The Lakers will be fun to watch, because that starting backcourt has so much offensive talent. Unfortunately, they’re not a contender right now.

Let’s start at the top. The Thunder and the Spurs have the deepest, most talented rosters in the league heading into 2026-27, and I fully expect a Western Conference Finals rematch. This time, OKC will be hungry for revenge.

Behind those two, things get interesting. I see Denver, Houston and Minnesota fighting it out for the third seed, and any of them could take it.

Why I’m buying Houston

The Rockets have a lot going for them. Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams are back after the long-term injuries that wrecked their chances last season, and Marcus Smart arrives to bring elite defense, leadership and playmaking. Add in a young core of Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard, all of whom should keep improving, and this roster has both polish and upside.

Kevin Durant may finally get past the 1st round of the Playoffs in what feels like ages. His unique ability to effortlessly drop an efficient 25-30 points at this stage of his career is what makes him an all-time great.

Also, let’s not forget the man on the sideline. Ime Udoka is an intimidating presence who demands the best from his players, and that culture of accountability is exactly what carried the Celtics to the NBA Finals in his first season in Boston.

The bottom line

Overall, if the Houston Rockets stay healthy, this is a legitimate title contender. That’s a big “if,” but the ceiling is real.

People hold extremely strong opinions about all-time NBA rankings, and a lot of it comes down to bias: which legends they grew up loving, which teams they root for, which teams they can’t stand. That personal attachment clouds objective judgment. Ask people to rank the 10 greatest players ever, and you’ll see them talk down all-time greats using weak reasoning- one limitation in their game, one bad clutch moment, because it doesn’t fit their narrative.

With that said, here’s my top 10 based on stats, accolades, two-way impact, team success, and longevity:

1. Michael Jordan: The GOAT. Unmatched competitiveness, athleticism, scoring ability and killer instinct in the clutch, backed by a perfect 6-0 record in the Finals.

2. LeBron James: No one has sustained greatness longer. The NBA’s all-time leading scorer and 4th all-time in assists, with a rare blend of size, power, skill, and IQ.

3. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: The greatest center ever. Dominant on both ends, with 6 MVPs and 6 championships to show for it.

4. Bill Russell: The greatest defender, rebounder, and winner in league history. Led the Celtics to 11 titles in 13 seasons.

5. Wilt Chamberlain: The record-breaker. Averaged 30 and 20 for his career- a level of statistical dominance no one’s touched. His legacy’s only knock: just 2 titles.

6. Larry Bird: The most skilled all-around offensive player of his era, lethal in the clutch and unmatched as a trash-talker. Led Boston to 3 titles in the ‘80s.

7. Magic Johnson: The greatest floor general ever, running Showtime in L.A. to 5 championships. He and Bird are practically interchangeable here as Bird was the better individual talent, but Magic won more with his team.

8. Tim Duncan: The greatest power forward ever. Quietly, relentlessly dominant on both ends for two decades in San Antonio, with 5 titles to prove it.

9. Shaquille O’Neal: No one dominated through sheer physicality like Shaq. As entertaining off the court as he was feared on it, he won 4 championships- 3 in L.A., 1 in Miami.

10. Hakeem Olajuwon: The greatest post player and one of the greatest defenders ever. Led Houston to back-to-back titles, and he’d rank even higher with one or two more.

Honourable mentions for #10: Kobe Bryant and Stephen Curry

Both are among the most beloved players in league history. Kobe’s Mamba Mentality made him basically a slightly-less-lethal MJ, and he won 5 rings with the Lakers. Steph redefined the sport entirely, becoming the greatest shooter by a long way, and one of the greatest offensive players the game has seen, with 4 titles in Golden State. I just couldn’t bring myself to bump Hakeem or Shaq for them.

Here we go again.

Every year, it feels like Boston has to re-earn respect it already won. And every year, the outside noise doesn’t seem to match what’s actually on the roster. If the Celtics stay healthy, they can get to 50+ wins which would be good enough for a top-4 seed in the East. It’s not a reach. It’s the baseline.

People doubted them heading into last regular season too, and Boston still walked away as the 2-seed. I don’t see why this year plays out any differently.

So what actually went wrong last Playoffs? Because it wasn’t a talent problem. It was Embiid pulling off a surprise return at the worst possible time, Tatum missing a pivotal Game 7, and a few rotation decisions from Joe Mazzulla that, in hindsight, deserved more scrutiny. Strip those variables out and Boston’s floor looks a lot higher. I’d bet on them showing up as a real contender this time- not a team one bad week away from another early exit.

Now, about Paul George.

I think people are sleeping on him too, and not just as a name on the roster. Yes, his superstar days are behind him. But “not a superstar anymore” doesn’t mean “not valuable”- George is still an efficient, high-IQ, two-way contributor, and he’s chasing something he’s never had: a title. That kind of hunger, paired with his basketball IQ, tends to translate well in a locker room. I think he fits Boston’s culture, and I think he fits Mazzulla’s system, too.

The roster, on paper, is very good.

Starting five: Pritchard, White, George, Tatum, Queta
Bench: Conley, Scheierman, Hauser, Gonzalez, Robinson

That’s not even mentioning the likes of Walsh, Harper Jr. or Garza.

That’s not just talented- it’s deep, and depth is exactly what separates teams that survive a seven-game series from teams that don’t. Put it all together and I wouldn’t be shocked if Boston quietly outplays the hype around the Knicks and 76ers this season.

Nobody’s talking about the Celtics right now. That might be exactly the position they want to be in.

1. Spurs vs. Thunder

This feels like the rivalry the NBA is going to be talking about for years.

San Antonio and Oklahoma City are clearly two of the best teams in the West, and both are built around extremely young superstar cores that should keep them near the top of the conference for a long time. That alone gives this matchup enormous potential.

Then there’s Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren. Their individual battle adds another layer to what could become the defining Western Conference rivalry of the next decade. If these two teams spend the next five or ten years fighting for conference supremacy, this rivalry could become something special.

2. Celtics vs. 76ers

For years, Boston had Philadelphia’s number.

Joel Embiid has lost four playoff series to the Celtics, with three different supporting casts built around him. But the script finally flipped when the Sixers eliminated Boston in the first round.

And then Philadelphia made things even more personal, acquiring former Celtics star Jaylen Brown in exchange for Paul George and draft picks. Add LeBron James, arguably one of the most hated players in Boston history, and suddenly this isn’t just another Eastern Conference matchup.

It’s a blood feud.

3. Knicks vs. Pacers

The rivalry that defined the 1990s is back.

Knicks-Pacers has always been about contrast. Indiana wants to play fast, attack relentlessly and overwhelm teams with offense, while New York brings a physical, bruising style that makes every possession feel like a fight.

At the center of Indiana’s resurgence is Tyrese Haliburton, whose playmaking and pace have made the Pacers one of the league’s most entertaining teams. On the other side, the Knicks have embraced the kind of physical, hard-nosed basketball that made this rivalry so memorable in the first place.

Recent playoff battles have already brought back the animosity. With both teams competing near the top of the East, this is no longer nostalgia- it’s a real rivalry again.

4. Knicks vs. Celtics

New York and Boston have never needed much help hating each other.

The geographical and cultural rivalry has existed forever, but for much of the modern NBA era, the rivalry was more intense among the fan bases than between the teams themselves.

That’s changing.

With the Knicks finally winning a championship, New York has joined Boston as one of the East’s modern powers. Now there is something tangible at stake every time they meet: not just bragging rights, but a battle between two of the conference’s premier franchises.

New York vs. Boston has always mattered. Now the basketball matters too.

5. Celtics vs. Heat

Few teams have spent the last decade ruining each other’s postseason plans quite like Boston and Miami.

The rivalry stretches back to the Big Three era, but it reached another level when the Celtics and Heat met three times in four years in the Eastern Conference Finals. Those series produced some of the most intense playoff basketball of the era.

And now there’s a new twist.

With Giannis Antetokounmpo in Miami, the Heat suddenly have another superstar capable of pushing this rivalry into a new chapter. Boston-Miami already had plenty of history. Giannis gives it another reason to burn.

6. Nuggets vs. Timberwolves

If there is one team Nikola Jokić would probably rather not see in the playoffs, it’s Minnesota.

Denver has been one of the NBA’s premier contenders since winning the championship in 2023, but the Timberwolves have repeatedly exposed their weaknesses. Minnesota has eliminated the Nuggets twice in the last three years, using their combination of size, depth and suffocating defense to make life extremely difficult for Denver.

The Nuggets may still be the bigger championship favorite, but Minnesota has become their kryptonite.

The question now is whether Denver can finally figure them out, or whether the Timberwolves are simply a matchup nightmare that isn’t going away.

7. Lakers vs. Celtics

Some rivalries don’t need to be explained.

The Lakers and Celtics have been the NBA’s two defining franchises for generations.

Even when neither team is at its absolute best, Lakers-Celtics still feels different. The atmosphere is bigger. The attention is greater. And every game comes with decades of history attached to it.

This rivalry may not always be the most competitive one on the court, but it remains the NBA’s gold standard for franchise rivalries.

8. Knicks vs. Heat

If Knicks-Pacers represents the return of the 1990s, Knicks-Heat represents everything that made that era so memorable.

These games have always been ugly in the best possible way. Physical defense, hard fouls, low-scoring battles and playoff series that felt more like wars than basketball games.

The rivalry never truly disappeared, but New York’s emergence as an Eastern powerhouse has given it new relevance. Miami remains Miami, and the Knicks are once again one of the teams standing in their way.

Some rivalries are built on history. Others are built on championships.

Knicks-Heat is built on resentment.

Repeating as NBA champions has become incredibly difficult.

We haven’t seen a team do it since the Warriors won consecutive championships in 2017 and 2018. And as good as these Knicks are, they’re nowhere near the level of that Golden State superteam featuring Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala.

That alone should tell you how difficult New York’s task will be.

The Knicks Can’t Expect the Same Finals Again

Give the Knicks credit for how they won the championship. They simply refused to go away.

Even when they were down, they continued playing hard and repeatedly took over games in the fourth quarter on both ends of the floor. But they also benefited from some extremely poor decision-making and execution from the Spurs when it mattered most.

If New York gets back to the Finals, they can’t expect those same opportunities.

There’s also the loss of Mitchell Robinson, who joined the Celtics in free agency. Robinson wasn’t one of their stars, but his impact was huge. His offensive rebounding created extra possessions, while his size and rim protection gave the Knicks another defensive weapon in the paint.

That’s a significant loss for a team trying to repeat.

Philadelphia Might Be the Team to Beat in the East

The 76ers are the team I’m watching most closely in the Eastern Conference.

On paper, they have everything: All-Star talent, tremendous depth and a strong coaching staff. You could genuinely describe this roster as a superteam.

With the amount of talent at their disposal, anything short of reaching the NBA Finals would be a disappointing season.

And when you look around the league, there are really only two teams that can match Philadelphia’s combination of star power and depth: Oklahoma City and San Antonio.

My Top Three Title Contenders

The Knicks deserve respect as the defending champions, and they’re absolutely capable of making another deep playoff run.

But winning back-to-back championships is a completely different challenge.

Right now, I have three teams ahead of them:

1. San Antonio Spurs
2. Philadelphia 76ers
3. Oklahoma City Thunder

The Knicks are the champions until somebody knocks them off.

But if I had to pick the teams most likely to be holding the trophy at the end of the season, I’d take the Spurs, Sixers and Thunder over New York.

But talent alone doesn’t guarantee success.

The more interesting question is whether everything will actually fit together offensively.

Several of Philadelphia’s key players are accustomed to having the ball in their hands and operating as primary creators. Asking some of them to become effective off-ball threats, and accepting a reduced role at times, could take time. There’s a difference between having a collection of stars and having a team that plays naturally together.

Defensively, there are obvious question marks. The Sixers don’t have the elite personnel needed to consistently shut teams down, which means much of their success on that end will depend on Nick Nurse’s ability to design schemes that protect their weaknesses.

And that’s why, despite Philadelphia’s enormous upside, I’m backing the team that has already been there.

The San Antonio Spurs.

The Spurs Have Already Learned the Hardest Lesson

Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs did something remarkable last season: they eliminated Oklahoma City in the Western Conference Finals and earned a place in the NBA Finals.

For a young team, reaching that stage was an enormous achievement.

But the Finals exposed something that talent and regular-season success can’t teach you: what it takes to win when every possession feels like it carries the weight of an entire season.

The Spurs had opportunities. They built double-digit leads in multiple games. But the New York Knicks repeatedly found ways to respond, eventually rallying from double-digit deficits in all four of their victories to take the series.

San Antonio’s lack of experience and composure in those crucial moments ultimately proved costly.

But I don’t necessarily view that defeat as a reason to fade the Spurs.

I view it as the reason to believe in them.

Experience Changes Everything

Young teams often need to lose before they learn how to win.

The Spurs now know exactly what the Finals feel like.

They know how quickly a lead can disappear. They know how intense the pressure becomes late in games. They know what it feels like when an opponent refuses to go away. And, perhaps most importantly, they know what it feels like to come agonisingly close to a championship.

Those lessons are difficult to replicate in any other environment.

Next time, I expect San Antonio to be significantly more prepared for the bright lights.

Wembanyama and his teammates should be more comfortable in those situations, while the coaching staff will have a better understanding of what worked, what failed, and what needs to change when the margin for error becomes razor thin.

That experience could make an enormous difference.

The 2013–14 Spurs Comparison

There is a historical parallel that makes me particularly bullish on San Antonio.

After the Spurs suffered one of the most heartbreaking defeats in NBA Finals history against the Miami Heat in 2013, they came back the following season with a vengeance.

The result was one of the most beautiful examples of team basketball the league has ever seen.

They overwhelmed opponents with ball movement, unselfishness, precision and execution, eventually dismantling the Heat in the 2014 Finals to capture the championship.

Obviously, this current Spurs team is very different from that group.

But the underlying principle remains relevant.

Sometimes a painful Finals defeat doesn’t break a team.

It teaches one.

San Antonio has already experienced the highest level of basketball. Now the challenge is to turn that experience into composure.

The Veteran Piece Matters

Health, as always, will be critical.

No championship prediction survives a significant injury to a franchise player, and the Spurs are certainly no exception.

But I also believe Tobias Harris could prove to be an important piece of this team.

The Spurs don’t need him to be a star. They need him to provide what young teams often lack: veteran stability.

There will be moments when Wembanyama and the younger players inevitably feel the pressure once again. Having an experienced player who understands how to navigate difficult stretches, make the right decision and settle the team down could be invaluable.

Championship teams aren’t built solely on talent.

They’re built on balance, experience, resilience and trust.

San Antonio now has a chance to put all four together.

My Pick: San Antonio

The Sixers may ultimately prove me wrong.

If their stars stay healthy and their offensive pieces click quickly, Philadelphia has the talent to beat anyone. Their ceiling is enormous.

But when choosing between a superteam that still has to prove it can function as a unit and a young Spurs team that has already experienced the pain of falling one step short, I’m taking San Antonio.

They’ve been to the Finals.

They’ve felt the pressure.

They’ve learned what happens when a double-digit lead isn’t enough.

And now they have another year of development, another year of experience, and another opportunity to finish the job.

If Wembanyama stays healthy, the supporting cast continues to develop, and Tobias Harris provides the veteran leadership and stability this young team needs, I believe the Spurs have every chance to take that final step.

The prediction: San Antonio Spurs to win the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

Last year, they learned how to reach the mountain top.

This year, I think they finish the climb.

The NBA schedule hasn’t been released yet, but it’s already becoming easier to connect the dots.

At this point, it feels increasingly likely that the 76ers will open the regular season against either the Celtics or the Knicks. Those same two teams also appear to be the frontrunners for Philadelphia’s Christmas Day opponent.

A Celtics-76ers matchup would instantly become one of the league’s marquee events.

Boston’s blockbuster decision to send Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia in exchange for Paul George and multiple draft picks completely reshaped one of the NBA’s most iconic rivalries. Layer in LeBron James’ decades-long history with the Celtics and Joel Embiid’s own playoff battles against Boston, and you have no shortage of storylines. From a television standpoint, it’s hard to imagine many games generating more interest.

The Knicks present an equally compelling case.

Fresh off an NBA championship, New York swept the 76ers in the second round before marching all the way to the title. That alone creates a natural rematch worthy of either Opening Night or Christmas Day, especially with Philadelphia expected to enter the season looking much different than the team New York eliminated just a few months ago.

My expectation is that the NBA will lean into the Finals rematch and schedule Knicks-Spurs on Christmas Day. If that’s the case, Boston would become the obvious Christmas opponent for Philadelphia, making a Knicks-76ers showdown on Opening Night feel like the most logical outcome.

Another intriguing subplot involves LeBron James off the court.

There has been speculation that LeBron could spend part of the season living in New York while playing for the 76ers, taking advantage of the city’s unmatched entertainment and business opportunities. According to reports, the plan would involve commuting to Philadelphia via a roughly 45-minute helicopter ride—an arrangement that certainly fits the unique stage this season is setting.

Zooming out, this has the potential to be one of the NBA’s most fascinating seasons in years.

Oklahoma City and San Antonio are once again expected to lead the Western Conference, but the Eastern Conference looks considerably deeper than it did a year ago. While the Knicks enter as defending champions, the road back to the Finals won’t be nearly as straightforward. Several contenders have significantly upgraded their rosters, and the balance of power in the East suddenly feels far more competitive.

If the schedule falls the way many expect, the NBA won’t need long to remind everyone just how compelling this season could be.

On paper, the Philadelphia 76ers have as much talent as anyone in basketball.

A projected starting five of Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, and Joel Embiid is loaded with star power, while Anfernee Simons, Dean Wade, and Adem Bona provide legitimate depth off the bench. Add in championship-winning head coach Nick Nurse and one of the NBA’s most passionate fanbases, and it’s hard not to view Philadelphia as one of the favourites to represent the Eastern Conference in the 2027 NBA Finals.

Anything short of a Conference Finals appearance would feel like a huge letdown.

The offensive ceiling is obvious. Maxey’s speed, Brown’s two-way scoring, LeBron’s playmaking, Embiid’s dominance in the paint, and the added spacing and creation from the bench give the Sixers answers to almost every defensive coverage. They should have enough shot creation, athleticism, and basketball IQ to rank among the league’s elite offenses.

The defensive outlook isn’t quite as straightforward.

Embiid has rarely entered the postseason fully healthy, LeBron is no longer the defender he was in his prime, and the backcourt combination isn’t exactly built to lock teams down. There are still enough quality defenders on the roster, but this won’t be a group that overwhelms opponents with stops over an 82-game season.

The playoffs, though, are a different challenge.

With a week to prepare for one opponent and a coach like Nick Nurse making adjustments from game to game, the Sixers don’t necessarily need to be an elite defensive team. They simply need to be good enough. If they’re healthy, their offensive firepower should allow them to win shootouts against almost anyone. In a seven-game series, betting against a team with this much top-end talent is difficult.

Of course, everything comes back to the same question.

Health.

It always has with Joel Embiid, and now LeBron James’ age becomes part of that equation as well. It’s difficult to picture both stars arriving in April at 100 percent, and Philadelphia’s championship hopes likely depend on exactly that. Talent has never really been the issue for the Sixers. Availability has.

That’s why this team is so fascinating.

Their ceiling is an NBA championship. Their floor, if injuries strike again, is another postseason that ends far earlier than expected. There may not be another contender in the league with a wider range of possible outcomes.

Regardless of what happens, one thing is already clear: the Eastern Conference is suddenly must-watch basketball again. With Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Kawhi Leonard, and Paul George all changing teams, the balance of power has shifted dramatically. The road to the NBA Finals has never felt more unpredictable.

The Western Conference feels destined to deliver the matchup rematch everyone wants: Victor Wembanyama vs. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Assuming both teams stay healthy, San Antonio and Oklahoma City remain the class of the conference. They’re deeper, younger, and more talented than everyone else in the West, with Denver standing out as the one veteran contender capable of disrupting either team’s path.

The last time these two met, the Spurs prevailed in seven games, but there’s an important caveat. Oklahoma City wasn’t at full strength, with Jalen Williams sidelined for the series. If the Thunder are healthy this time around, they’ll be even more dangerous, motivated by the chance to return to the championship standard they set in 2025.

Still, I’m giving the edge to San Antonio.

Last season’s Finals defeat should prove invaluable. Every championship contender needs its scars, and the Spurs now have theirs. That run gave them experience in the biggest moments, exposed the areas they needed to improve, and should leave them better equipped for another deep playoff push.

I expect another classic between these two teams. But with Wembanyama continuing his ascent and the Spurs carrying the lessons of a heartbreaking Finals loss, I think they finally get over the line.

Prediction: Spurs in 7

East: Celtics over Heat

If the West feels top-heavy, the East is pure chaos.

The Knicks enter as defending champions, but history isn’t on their side. No team has reached back-to-back NBA Finals since 2019, a reminder of just how difficult it has become to repeat a Finals run in today’s NBA.

Then there’s everything that changed over the summer. Giannis Antetokounmpo is in Miami. Jaylen Brown is in Philadelphia. Paul George is in Boston. Kawhi Leonard is back in Toronto. And one major storyline still hangs over the conference, with Philadelphia, Miami, and Cleveland all viewed as potential landing spots for LeBron James.

Beyond the headline moves, there are plenty of other contenders. Tyrese Haliburton’s return could put Indiana back among the East’s elite, while Detroit deserves far more attention after finishing with the conference’s best regular-season record last year.

With so many legitimate contenders, predicting the East feels almost impossible.

Even so, I keep coming back to a familiar rivalry: Boston vs. Miami. We’ve seen these teams define the conference over the past several years, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they met again.

At full strength, I think Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jayson Tatum are the two best players in the East. Add in Erik Spoelstra and Joe Mazzulla, two of the league’s best head coaches, and it’s easy to see why both teams will be difficult to eliminate.

In the end, I’ll back Boston’s balance, depth, and star power to win another gruelling series and return to the NBA Finals.

Prediction: Celtics in 6

At this point in LeBron’s career, it makes more sense for him to scale back as a scorer and lean into what he still does better than almost anyone: creating easy offense for everyone else.

The problem in Cleveland is that the backcourt isn’t built to maximize that version of LeBron. Both Donovan Mitchell and James Harden are most comfortable with the ball in their hands. Harden, especially, is a pass-first initiator who needs to orchestrate the offense. That likely pushes LeBron into spending more possessions off the ball, functioning as a scoring forward instead of the offense’s primary engine.

The defensive side of the equation is just as tricky. Cleveland already has questions on the perimeter, and asking a 41-year-old LeBron to consistently erase those problems by defending elite wings night after night isn’t a realistic expectation anymore.

That’s why I don’t think the fit is as seamless as it looks on paper. Many of the same questions that followed LeBron in Los Angeles would still exist in Cleveland. Yes, swapping Deandre Ayton and Rui Hachimura for Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen is a massive upgrade in the frontcourt. But the Lakers also had Luka Dončić: arguably the best offensive engine in basketball. Cleveland simply doesn’t have a player who bends defenses at that level.

In the end, I think this team would be very good. A top-four seed in the East feels well within reach. But if we’re talking about legitimate title favourites, I’m not sure this version of the Cavaliers would belong in that conversation.

LeBron James isn’t just deciding where he’ll play next season. He’s deciding how one of the greatest careers in basketball history will end. Cleveland, meanwhile, offers the perfect storybook ending. A third and final stint with the Cavs would bring LeBron’s career full circle, giving him one last opportunity to win a championship where it all began. He would immediately elevate Cleveland’s offense and solve many of their late-game issues. The concern is whether the Cavaliers’ core has shown enough in recent postseasons. Philadelphia deserves to be in the conversation after acquiring Jaylen Brown, while also strengthening its depth with Dean Wade. On paper, that’s one of the league’s most talented teams, and LeBron would be the perfect connector between their stars. The only hesitation is the same one that has followed the 76ers for years: staying healthy and delivering when the playoffs arrive.

Minnesota is an intriguing fit because of Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves’ elite defense, but it still feels unlikely. Even with LeBron, it’s difficult to confidently put them above Oklahoma City or San Antonio in the Western Conference. They’re worth mentioning, but they’re probably on the outside looking in.

He stays in California, remaining close to family, while also getting the opportunity to finally team up with Stephen Curry after giving everyone a glimpse of what that partnership could look like with Team USA. Steve Kerr already knows how to coach both stars, and Draymond Green’s team-friendly pay cut has given Golden State the flexibility to make a good financial offer. The basketball fit, the lifestyle, and the financial situation all point in the same direction.

Miami, Cleveland, and Philadelphia all have compelling arguments, but Golden State feels like the destination that makes the most sense when everything is weighed together. Of course, we’ll see how it all plays out. One thing seems certain: wherever LeBron lands, the ripple effect across the league will be felt. The teams that miss out won’t stand still- they’ll immediately pivot to other options in free agency or the trade market, creating another wave of moves that could reshape the NBA before opening night.

The Celtics spent years refusing to include Jaylen Brown in blockbuster talks. That said, this is far from a superteam. Father Time remains undefeated, and asking a roster built around veteran stars to navigate an 82-game season and four playoff rounds is an enormous challenge. In the Western Conference alone, teams like Oklahoma City, San Antonio and Denver are younger, deeper and better equipped for the long grind of a championship campaign.

Still, if Curry, LeBron, Butler, Draymond, Porziņģis and Horford are healthy when the playoffs arrive, few teams will want to face them. Their combination of elite basketball IQ, championship experience and complementary skill sets gives Golden State a legitimate chance to make one final title run- the stuff of dreams.

Whether it ends with another ring or not, this feels like the NBA’s last great all-in gamble: a team built not for the future, but for one unforgettable season that will go down in history one way or another.

The Clippers and Raptors have essentially swapped timelines.

Toronto is making the kind of bet that front offices dream about and fans lose sleep over. If Kawhi Leonard is healthy in April, there are very few players in basketball capable of changing a playoff series the way he can. Championship-caliber wings simply don’t become available very often, and the Raptors decided the upside was worth the gamble.

The fit with Edwards is especially intriguing. Ant has developed into one of the NBA’s premier shot creators, but he’s often been asked to carry a massive playmaking burden as well. LaMelo takes some of that responsibility off his plate while giving the Wolves another player capable of bending defenses with the ball in his hands. Instead of relying almost exclusively on Edwards to create late in games, Minnesota would suddenly have two players who can initiate offense at a high level.

Of course, this isn’t a risk-free move.

Health has been the defining question of LaMelo’s career. Every discussion about his value eventually circles back to availability. If you’re trading significant assets, you’re betting that the version of Ball we’ve only seen in flashes becomes the version you get over an 82-game season and into the playoffs.

Then there’s Naz Reid.

Reid has become one of the NBA’s best luxury role players- the type every contender wishes it had. His combination of shooting, scoring versatility, rebounding, and energy gives Minnesota lineup flexibility few teams can match. Replacing those minutes isn’t as simple as plugging another big into the rotation. His value goes beyond the box score.

Charlotte’s side of the deal is easier to understand than it might initially seem.

Moving a player as talented as LaMelo is never ideal, but if the organization has concerns about building around an injury-prone star, this package offers a reset without bottoming out. Reid is entering his prime, fits virtually any roster construction, and immediately raises the floor of the frontcourt. Add in multiple draft assets, and suddenly the Hornets have far more flexibility, whether that’s developing young talent or packaging those picks in a future move.

This ultimately comes down to organizational philosophy.

Minnesota would be making a ceiling play. Charlotte would be making a stability play.

History usually rewards teams willing to gamble on elite talent, provided that talent actually stays on the floor. If LaMelo can finally put together a healthy season, the Timberwolves suddenly have one of the league’s most dynamic backcourts and a legitimate path toward contention. If the injuries continue, Charlotte may look back on this as the move that gave them the depth, flexibility, and long-term foundation they were searching for all along.

Celtics fans have every reason to trust Brad Stevens because he has consistently proven himself to be one of the best basketball minds in the NBA. Since moving into the front office, Stevens has made a series of bold and calculated decisions that transformed the Celtics into champions. From assembling a title-winning roster to making difficult financial and roster decisions afterward, he’s shown a willingness to make moves that prioritize long-term success over short-term popularity.

Even after winning a championship, Stevens has kept Boston in a position to compete despite losing key contributors from that title team. Rather than standing pat, he has continued to reshape the roster while maintaining flexibility for the future. His track record suggests that every move is made with a clear vision in mind.

Reports indicate Stevens drew the line when Milwaukee refused to accept a proposed deal involving Jaylen Brown and multiple first-round picks. They wanted additional young players. Whether or not those discussions were ever close, it demonstrates that Stevens is aggressive enough to explore blockbuster opportunities while also knowing when to walk away if the value isn’t there.

Now, the Celtics appear to be exploring ways to diversify their offensive identity. While their three-point-heavy attack has been one of the league’s most effective systems, adding a reliable interior scorer and more quality depth would make the team even more difficult to defend in the postseason. Becoming less dependent on the three-point shot could give Boston another dimension when games slow down in the playoffs.

That naturally leads to speculation about Jaylen Brown’s future. Trade rumours are nothing new for the Celtics, and Brown’s name will likely continue to surface as the front office evaluates every opportunity to improve the roster. Whether he ultimately stays or is moved in a blockbuster deal remains to be seen, but Stevens has earned the benefit of the doubt with every major decision he’s made.

No matter what happens this offseason, the Celtics should enter next season with plenty of star power, a strong supporting cast, and legitimate championship aspirations. As long as they can stay healthy, there’s every reason to believe Boston will once again be among the favourites to compete for another NBA title.

The success of any potential Miami Heat title run would begin and end with Giannis Antetokounmpo’s health. When fully healthy, Giannis remains one of the most dominant and impactful players in basketball. Few players in NBA history have combined his blend of size, athleticism, strength, and skill. That is the foundation of a championship contender. The rest will come down to health, roster balance, and whether Miami can provide enough shooting around its stars to unlock its full potential when the games matter most.

The Cavaliers face a difficult reality heading into the 2026 season: James Harden can no longer be viewed as the centerpiece of a championship contender.

At some point, the league has to accept what the postseason sample has repeatedly shown. The frontcourt presents another difficult question. Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen are excellent regular-season players who provide elite rim protection, rebounding, and defensive versatility. Yet postseason basketball is a different challenge. Against the league’s best teams, both players have too often struggled to impose themselves physically or provide consistent offensive production. Cleveland has to ask itself whether keeping both big men is the best path forward, or whether moving one could help address other roster deficiencies.

The perimeter defense is arguably an even bigger concern.

If your starting backcourt consists of Harden and Donovan Mitchell, elite defenders around them are not a luxury- they are a necessity. Cleveland has repeatedly been exposed by high-level perimeter creators in recent years. Players such as Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Haliburton, and Jalen Brunson have consistently found ways to attack the Cavaliers’ defensive weaknesses. Until that changes, it will be difficult to view Cleveland as a legitimate title threat.

That is what makes this offseason so important.

The Cavaliers have already proven they can win regular-season games. They have shown they can secure favourable playoff positioning and establish themselves as one of the Eastern Conference’s better teams. But those accomplishments no longer move the needle.

The standard has changed.

For Cleveland, success is no longer about winning 50-plus games or earning a top-four seed. It is about proving that this core can survive the intensity of playoff basketball, break through the barriers that have stopped them in recent years, and finally reach the NBA Finals.

Until that happens, questions about this roster, and its ceiling, will remain impossible to ignore.

The Knicks will likely need to part ways with a few key bench contributors this offseason to avoid crossing into the NBA’s second apron. Even so, their foundation appears secure. The starting five of Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, and Karl-Anthony Towns should remain intact, giving New York one of the league’s strongest cores heading into next season. With that group in place, the Knicks are well-positioned to build on this year’s success rather than start over.

Still, projecting future champions is rarely straightforward.

The NBA has not seen a repeat champion in nearly a decade, a reminder that winning a title requires far more than talent alone. Health, timing, matchup luck, and a few fortunate breaks often play just as significant a role as roster construction. A championship run frequently depends on staying healthy through four gruelling playoff rounds while benefiting from injuries or setbacks elsewhere in the bracket. Just as importantly, contenders must capitalize when opponents fail to perform under pressure.

We saw that dynamic play out this postseason. The Spurs repeatedly let double-digit leads slip away, undone by lapses in poise, decision-making, and late-game execution. Those moments ultimately proved costly and may have been the difference between celebrating a championship and wondering what could have been.

That is one reason I expect a different champion next season.

San Antonio should return with plenty of motivation after watching a title opportunity slip through its fingers. If Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper continue their development, and if the supporting cast improves its ability to close out games, the Spurs could enter next season as the team to beat.

In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Celtics remain the standard for sustained excellence. The core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Payton Pritchard gives Boston a strong foundation, and the organization will once again look to President Brad Stevens to strengthen the roster around them. If he can do so, the Celtics should have another legitimate opportunity to reach the NBA Finals and pursue Banner 19.

Beyond the conference’s established powers, several young teams are worth monitoring. The Detroit Pistons appear poised to continue their ascent after a breakthrough season, while the Charlotte Hornets remain one of the league’s more intriguing long-term projects. Both organizations still have work to do, but with continued player development and smart roster additions, each could take a meaningful step forward in the year ahead.

The league’s landscape changes quickly. Today’s contender can become tomorrow’s disappointment, while a young team can rise faster than expected. That uncertainty is part of what makes every NBA season so compelling, and why predicting next year’s champion remains as difficult as ever.
